The British Triple Crown

Three races within the five Classics are collectively known as the Triple Crown. Winning all three races is an accolade that most owners and trainers want for their horses. The first leg of the Triple Crown starts with the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, first run in 1809. The second is the Derby, first run in 1780. The last and oldest of the three is St Leger Stakes, inaugurated in 1776.

Some of the most famous racehorses have made a name for themselves in these prestigious horse races in the UK. The very first racehorse to win the Derby – St Leger double in 1800 was the well-named racehorse Champion. The Triple Crown was inaugurated in 1809 and first won in 1853 by thoroughbred West Australian. Nijinsky won the last Triple Crown accolade in 1970.
