Grey gelding foaled 11 April 1979
by Grey Mirage out of Flower Child,
Desert Orchid had been retired longer than he raced, still has his fan club and his presence was as desirable on parade as it once was on the racetrack.
When in December 2005 his trainer David Elsworth left his Whitsbury training stables after 25 years, Dessie packed up and went with him. His new home was the historical Egerton Stables in Newmarket where Richard Marsh trained Persimmon and Diamond Jubilee for King Edward. The home of flat racing welcomed them both with open arms and Dessie settled right in, basking in all of the attention.
Few who saw him will forget him and ‘LIVING LEGEND’ was the only way to describe him.
Died, aged 27 in his stable at Egerton Stud
We welcome Dessie stories and will credit any photos sent.
