Party Politics History
Foaled in 1984, Party Politics career couldn’t have started out in worse fashion, as he fell on his debut and was pulled up on his reappearance. Hardly inspiring stuff! However, he made amends third time at Warwick out winning at odds of 40-1. He had made a mistake at the ninth but made headway approaching 11th, led by the 13th and ran on well to record his first victory. The odds were not so rewarding when he followed up at the same track later in the month, when he beat Garrison Savannah another horse set for the Grand National trail in the coming years.
The following season Party Politics recorded wins at Newbury (twice) and Warwick. The 1991/2 season started with some very creditable runs but no wins, being placed in the Hennessy Gold Cup and the Welsh National. However, after a lack lustre performance in the Greenalls compensation was to follow! In April 1992, the gelding wrote his name in the history books by taking the Martell Grand National, the toughest steeplechase in the UK racing calendar. He was always prominent, and led 4 out, running on well under pressure on the flat to pick up a first prize of nearly £100,000.
There were still wins left in the brave gelding and in 1993, he won the Greenalls at Haydock, but was deprived another shot at the National as the race was famously declared ‘void’, and the following year he took the Rehearsal Chase at Chepstow. He then missed a season and returned the following year runner up in the Rehearsal and also chased home Royal Athlete in the 1995 National, the last time he was to complete a race in his career. Following a poor run in the Greenalls where he was pulled up, he tackled the ’96 National and after taking a bad fall at the third he was retired.
